Alfred Zampa Memorial (Carquinez) Bridge- Carquinez, CA:

MacDonald Architects was hired by Caltrans to develop bike/pedestrian pathways for the new Carquinez Bridge.  This illustration shows a typical part of the pathway that will be located on one of the bridge decks of this suspension bridge.

MacDonald Architects completed five prototype rail systems, models and illustration utilized in the Public Hearings with the City of Crockett Design Advisory Panel, BCDC and Caltrans.  The handrails were created from the new bridge architectural vocabulary.  For example, the illustration above shows a vertical supporting structural member that is a takeoff from a hanging suspender cable.  This handrail required an open design approach in order to prevent bridge deck oscillation.
