| MacDonald Architects, established in 1966, is an architecture firm that specializes in providing professional
services to engineers on bridge projects. The firm works closely with engineers on all aspects of bridge
aesthetics from conceptualization through design details. We emphasize close cooperation with bridge engineers
in designing appropriate, creative solutions that reflect the site and address the needs and aspirations of the
community.
Architects generally do not have an extensive knowledge of structural engineering. However, MacDonald Architects has uniquely trained architects who have an extensive background in structural engineering. Principal Donald MacDonald, FAIA, obtained his Bachelor of Architecture Degree at the University of Oklahoma and Master of Architecture at Columbia University. He taught at the University of California at Berkeley before establishing his own firm in San Francisco. Mr. MacDonald has over 30 years experience in architectural design, historic rehabilitation, planning, contract administration, and construction management of complex projects. In 1983 the American Institute of Architects recognized his achievements in design by endowing Fellowship to the AIA in the outstanding design category. Mr. MacDonald has provided design services for bridge structures over the past twenty years. During this time, he has developed specific expertise in establishing design guidelines for aesthetics for both new and historical bridges, as well as aesthetics for seismic rehabilitation. This expertise has been honed through his work on the seismic rehabilitation of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge, the design of the new East Span of the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge, and other bridges, elevated roadways, and viaducts throughout the United States. Mr. MacDonald has designed new construction in both historical areas and in sensitive natural environments. |
