STRETCHING THE LIMITS

PUSHING BEYOND ORTHODOX approaches and taking chances opens up new possibilities. The result that seemed impossible or out of reach begins to take form. The form evolves, develops into a plan, and unfolds into reality.

Donald MacDonald Architects block model method encourages experimentation. As seen in this design for a city hall in Edmonton, Alberta, they begin to define the space using three-dimensional blocks instead of confining ideas to two dimensions.

Color-coding blocks by use, they analyze functional connections to determine the most effective relationships. The structure is evident from the beginning: its height, its presence, its compatibility to the site.

From ideas generated in the initial phase, the process goes on to a rough model, then detailed floor and site plans, and finallya finished model. Each stage involves invention and ongoing refinement of the concept to meet the objectives.
