WEIGHING THE IMPLICATIONS

WHEN CREATIVITY AND RESPONSIVENESS COINCIDE, the result works for people and for the landscape. The design does far more than simply make an aesthetic statement, it addresses social concerns and integrates into the social context.

The Frank G. Mar complex in Oakland, California, exemplifies the successful melding of design and community. It has transformed a deteriorating area into a thriving urban village that addresses both affordability and individuality.

Pitched roofs and balconied towers project images of "home" within a largely flat-roofed landscape.  Townhouses with three to four bedrooms give young families room to grow. Smaller, mid-rise units fulfill senior and handicapped tenants needs for security, accessibility, and efficiency.

HE COMBINES AN ELEMENT OF ARCHITECTURAL AESTHETIC

WITH A COMMITTED SOCIAL CONSCIENCE, A RARE COMBINATION

FOR AN INNOVATIVE DESIGNER.

The mixed-use plan makes Mar a functioning neighborhood. Retail shops, office space, and parking both serve residents and bring in the larger community. A day care center services single parents and families with two wage earners.
