RESPECTING THE OBJECTIVES

CONSIDERATION FOR HUMAN NEEDS guides the creative process. A building, a bridge, any structure must respond to the client, to the users, and to the community. It must be functional, safe, and sensible. And it must be completed on time and within budget.

Retrofitting the Golden Gate Bridge to better withstand earthquakes and to meet the demands of increasing traffic takes a nuts-and-bolts understanding of engineering and architectural principles coupled with humanistic awareness.

Donald MacDonald Architects have worked closely with bridge engineers to preserve the landmark's famed silhouette while updating its structure. High-strength bolts replaced rivets, concealed damping material reinforces towers and trusses, and steel plates at tower bases add support.

New toll booths retain the art deco theme of the originals, but better protect workers with their high-impact construction, continuously filtered ventilation systems, and anti-glare tinted glass.
