Donald MacDonald Architects created the Design Criteria Report that serves as a guideline for participating engineering firms when designing the final seismic retrofit measures for the North/South Viaduct and Main Span Retrofit, the Main Span Wind Retrofit, the Bicycle Safety Rail, and any other specific elements or work done for the Golden Gate Bridge.

North/South Viaduct and Main Span Retrofit:
Donald MacDonald Architects provided the design criteria, coordination and review of the final seismic retrofit measures. These measures were engineered by T.Y. Lin International, Imbsen, and Sverdrup Inc. for historic and aesthetic compatibility with the existing structure.

The Fort Point Arch of the Golden Gate Bridge spans 320 feet and consists of four parallel arches interconnected by a vast web of members- creating a visually complicated, yet unique composition.

Under design supervision by Donald MacDonald Architects, the seismic retrofit and placement of new elements of this structure was engineered without compromising the initial integrity of the arch design.

Main Span Wind Retrofit:
During the retrofit, it was discovered that the bridge would not be able to withstand high winds for long periods of time. The 106 Document was used as a guideline for adding a state-of-the-art wind form as a new structure on the west side of the Golden Gate Bridge.
